What is it?
Frequently referred to among English-speaking cultures as Roman coriander, black cumin, black caraway and onion seed, it is known today primarily as black seed, which is at the very least an accurate description of its physical appearance. The earliest record of its cultivation and use comes from ancient Egypt.
The seeds of Nigella sativa are used as a spice in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. The black seeds taste like a combination of onions, black pepper and oregano. The dry-roasted seeds flavor curries, vegetables and pulses.

Its active compounds include crystalline nigellone and thymoquinone – believed to be what’s mainly responsible for the oil’s potent medicinal properties, along with, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, proteins and vitamins B1, B2,B3, calcium, folate, iron, copper, zinc and phosphorous.
Many health experts claim that it is a true panacea; able to help cure everything from allergies to hypertension.
What can I do with it?
The seeds can be eaten whole in salads and baked goods or ground into a paste or sprouted.
The oil can be used in salads and cooking.
How do I store it ?
It is best kept in an airtight container in your pantry or in the freezer where it will keep for many months.
